What is Hustle Culture?
Hustle culture is identified by pushing one’s limits in terms of working. As industrial development rapidly paces, people must escalate their work rate to reach their goals. Hence, people tend to have an intense commitment to work.
There are a lot of interpretations of hustle culture, such as overwork. It is setting unrealistic goals without mending the balance between work and personal life and normalizing the burnout phases in the working field.
Many people romanticize hustle culture as the reason behind their goals. Many people think hustle culture is a natural thing to do without paying attention to other aspects such as physical and mental health. Because more and more people are romanticizing this idea, this is becoming more and more common, especially in Gen-Z.
Is Hustle Culture Bad for Us?
Once the hustle culture is started to be romanticized by many people, then it will be concerning. In the future, the work environment will become unhealthy because it will be filled with people who often compete to achieve all the unrealistic goals they have set for themselves.
If we are too often in an environment that requires us to overwork every task, we will burn out more quickly. If you burn out too often, work will no longer be fun. So, there is no longer any joy in working. If work is only done to pursue goals, that enthusiasm will only last for a while because the feeling of joy will not be included in the process of carrying out each work.
Potential Pros of Hustle Culture
There are various reasons for a person before deciding to implement a hustle culture. There are different positive considerations that can lead to a good purpose, as mentioned below:
- Productivity
The employee will have no slump era because the working environment is already set as if they have to compete to be as productive as possible. Therefore, there will be only limited breaks in terms of working since the productivity rate is on its highest.
- Increase in position
The possibility of increased position will be higher because the level of productivity when working is also higher. Hence, many people tend to give up a lot of time to work on as many goals as possible.
- Many achievements
With so many tasks completed in the shortest possible time, people will get more and more achievements as the output.
Is Hustle Culture Now Still a Thing?
If you are still sitting at your desk after the sun is set, you are likely implementing a hustle culture. It is not a good thing if you feel the urge not to leave your desk and put down your work once the working hours are done. Mind you, resting is as important as working, and those two things have to be in balance.
As this generation is prone to implementing this hustle culture, we often normalize working outside of the working hours, even on holidays. There will be a feeling of guilt whenever the idea of overwork is not applied.
Since we know it is not the most ideal way of work, let’s create a healthy working environment instead. If it starts with us, it will also lead to the others!
