4 Branding Genius x Crisis Jazmine Tan, A Girl’s Girl We Wanna Adore for A Longer Time

I was grateful for having one of Jazmine Tan’s short videos popped up on my Youtube. When I lost confidence in building my assertive communication skills with my former crush, I accidentally came across Jazmine Tan’s content, which emphasized that personal growth is the key to confidence. It successfully restored my self-assurance.

As an audience member, I felt empowered because the issues Jazmine discussed in her contents. Not just relevant for those who, like me, have been caught up in love bombing, her self-care tutorial videos—is something worth listening to as well.

Until she normalized a love bombing act, well, we don’t need to know whether she ended up with that love bomber or not, but I felt so betrayed. Then I decided to just look up her self-care videos, because I believe Jazmine Tan can be so much more than she imagined about herself through learning and growing new mindsets.

Here Are Potential Values, Some of Them Could be Warning!

1. Beauty Hacks, Tutorials, and Self-Care Tips

The reason why Jazmine Tan remains relevant to Indonesian audiences, and possibly some from outside Indonesia, is because she openly discusses self-care. Skincare routines, having enough sleep, and always spare time for working out. She also shares stories about how someone can still be attractive and smell good, even when wearing a men’s fragrance.

Jazmine Tan is literally a natural self-care queen, so I believe this could be her strongest personal branding. With several of her videos also showing how she cares about beauty products for her mother and her younger sister. It naturally portrays the persona of a big sis who is not only focused on taking care of herself (which we all love and live!).

2. Growth Mindset Based on Personal Experiences

Jazmine Tan has a confident personality and is comedic when sharing her personal experiences. From giving tips on how to become an “It Girl” while also having her own insecurities—like when she got a lip filler shot and a little kid mistook her for Fungus, a character from the animated film Monsters, Inc, she was genuinely shocked while lightly laughing at the temporary truth.

But what about her ‘a girl’s girl’ brand? A girl’s girl is someone who always has respect for female etiquette, will not be petty, and strives to be ethical in her dealings with her female friends, written by Urban Dictionary.

I still stand with my own opinion that her ‘Your Internet Big Sis’ is such a strong brand and quite empathetic since she also educated her sister to become a girl’s girl. However, when will she be able to keep her strong persona as a girl’s girl? Since that branding is the one she is focusing on.

3. (Warning) Double Standards of Mental Health

The branding of a girl’s girl could be identified as a new label for our internet big sis; pick me girl. In one of her YouTube Shorts titled ‘at least trauma made me funny’, Jazmine’s main point was that her humor is good because she has trauma from family-related aspect, while some people from harmonious families tend to have a dull, dark sense of humor.

Perhaps this content unintentionally triggered others, but it actually did, the comments are full of cynical people—who probably also came from traumatized families but completely disagree with Jazmine’s opinion. Traumas are things we need to embrace and learn from it, without looking down on the other side.

4. (Warning) A Misconception of A Girl’s Girl Actions Against Men

According to The Every Girl article, being a girl’s girl doesn’t mean that we have to hate men or people who don’t identify as women. This doesn’t automatically insinuate that men are less than women. Girls and women already knew how ‘downlifting by others (including some boys or men)’ feels, so a girl’s girl would never let others experience the same thing.

Talking about men, Jazmine slapped a poor man along with his baby talk while going on a date with her. I just hope that men won’t be traumatized to let himself express his soft side to his future girlfriend or wife.

Even with gestures, expression, and tone of voice in a video, it’s still sometimes giving Jazmine hate comments by calling her a pick me who hides behind a girl’s girl image. I believe Jazmine’s confidence is her natural uniqueness which does not need to be removed.

In order to save her girl’s girl brand, she could associate with real girls’ girls. Collaborating with the other internet big sisters, like Cinta Laura who always open to talk about women, mental health, and education. Indah G who knows when to admit her mistake and apologized about the way she gave opinions of Indonesian language’s words. Jazmine deserves chances like others, as much as she needs to keep learning and thriving.
