Finding Science in the Simple Things

Science is everywhere, even when we don’t realise it. It’s in the way water boils, the sound of music, or the sunlight that fills our room in the morning. We see it every day, yet many of us forget how much it quietly shapes our lives.

When Science Feels Complicated

People often grow up believing that science, especially physics, is something complicated and intimidating. Even from a young age, many students already feel afraid of it. But it really depends on how we are first introduced to science.

We rarely see it as something fun. The moment people hear the word science, they imagine endless formulas and complex theories. But the truth is, formulas don’t need to be memorised. I never tried to memorise every equation I learned in school because all of them were created to explain what already happens in real life.

Take pressure, for example. Why is its formula force divided by area? Imagine standing on ice. If you wear high heels, the ice cracks more easily than when you wear flat shoes. The weight stays the same, but the surface area changes. The smaller the area, the greater the pressure. Simple as that, and that’s physics.

Learning Through Curiosity

For children, science should be introduced through curiosity and play, not fear. Even small things, like pushing a school desk or dropping a ball, are part of physics because they involve force and motion. Fun experiments like these can spark curiosity long before textbooks ever do.

Back in middle school, I once felt completely stuck. There were too many formulas to learn at once, and because I studied under the Cambridge curriculum, everything was in English. It was overwhelming.
Then I met a teacher, a patient woman who taught me to stop being afraid of physics. She started from the basics, explaining slowly and clearly. “Physics is like a ladder,” she said. “If you skip one step, the next will always feel harder.”

She didn’t just tell me to memorise equations; she showed me how they were formed and why they made sense. That was when I realised science isn’t about memorising, it’s about thinking, connecting, and asking why.

Science Beyond the Classroom

Science doesn’t live only inside laboratories. It’s everywhere, in the machines we use, the air we breathe, and the quiet routines of our daily lives. Even centuries ago, Muslim scientists had already laid the foundation of modern science in optics, astronomy, medicine, and engineering.

As I write this using wired earphones, sound waves travel through the cable and reach my ears. When I ride my motorbike to work, combustion turns fuel into energy that moves the engine forward. And when I take the lift at the office, balanced forces work together so it can glide smoothly up and down.

Seeing Science in the World Around Us

The more I notice these things, the more I realise how science quietly shapes everything around us.

Long bridges stretch across rivers and withstand storms thanks to aerodynamic design and precise calculation. Even the devices we use every day, from touchscreens to cameras to the wireless signals that keep us connected, are small miracles of applied science shaped by human curiosity and discovery.

A World That Feels More Alive

Science isn’t distant or abstract. It’s right here, woven into the smallest parts of our daily lives. Once you start seeing it that way, the world begins to look a little less ordinary and a lot more alive.
