People often say that dreams are free. And sure, the dreaming part is. Imagining a life that feels bigger, softer, or simply more our own costs nothing. We can let our mind wander anywhere without needing permission.
But for people like me, only the imagination is free.
The pursuit is not.
The pursuit always asks for something in return.
Time, energy, discipline, sacrifices that sting a little, and sometimes even the courage to let go of versions of ourselves that no longer fit who we are becoming.
And honestly, there are days when life feels uneven.
Some people seem to walk one clean, straight line. They only need to focus on one dream and one direction. Their path looks clear, steady, almost designed for them.
Meanwhile I am here, thinking in branches.
Every decision feels like it splits into five more.
Choose this, lose that.
Focus here, delay something else.
Move forward on one path, watch another drift further away.
It is exhausting.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering why everything feels just a little more complicated for me compared to others.
But right after that thought, there is guilt.
A quiet voice that whispers maybe I am forgetting Allah when I should be remembering Him the most.
Then I pause.
Maybe the branches are not burdens.
Maybe they are forms of protection.
Maybe Allah is nudging me away from something I think I want but am not ready for.
Maybe the complexity is shaping me into someone who can hold the dream without breaking under it.
And strangely enough, that realisation softens everything.
The journey that feels expensive reminds me that I am not walking by myself.
Every confusion, every leap of faith, every small step forward… all of it is seen. All of it is guided.
Feeling lost does not mean I am far from Allah.
Sometimes it just means I am being invited back to trust Him again.
Dreams may be free to picture.
But the journey toward them is a training ground for the heart.
A place where patience grows, where surrender becomes a strength, and where faith slowly builds a home inside us.
And when Allah is the One arranging the path, no detour is meaningless.
Every branch, every delay, every redirection will eventually align into something that makes sense.
Just not always in the moment we expect it to.
